The B5 powertrain gets an EPA rating of 22 mpg city and 28 highway, while the B6 powertrain will earn 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The plug-in hybrid T8 powertrain gets the best EPA rating at 66 MPGe. According to EPA, XC90 models with the T8 can go 36 miles in electric-only mode.
