The Renegade might be Jeep’s smallest SUV, but it still gets a serious chunk of Jeep’s trail-tackling prowess. For 2023, the American automaker has reshuffled the Renegade’s trims and upgraded some of its optional packages. Under the hood of every 2023 Jeep Renegade is a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that coughs out 177 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the other subcompact crossovers, the Renegade comes standard with what is arguably the best all-wheel drive system in this segment. The Renegade delivers a comfortable ride and is composed around corners. Steering feedback is accurate, and the crossover provides a respectable off-road performance. The Renegade was not built for speed, yet its 9.0-second run to 60mph is not the worst we’ve seen. If you’d ever think of towing in a small SUV, the Renegade has something for you. It boasts 2000 lbs max towing capacity.
Jeep’s all-SUV lineup is not a place to come looking for fuel-efficient vehicles, but we are not disappointed with the Renegade’s EPA-rated 23 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined. In the off-road-oriented Trailhawk model, these ratings drop to 22/27 mpg in the city and highway, respectively.
There isn’t much going on in the Renegade’s interior. It is spacious, comfortable, and sports a simple design. Typical of small SUVs, the Renegade’s interior build quality is a mixed bag, but it sure delivers. Here, the driving position is comfortable and higher than what you get in most subcompact crossovers.
