What a luxury lease costs once New York City tax is added

New York charges sales tax on a lease at the start, on the total of all the payments, under the state’s lease tax regulation, 20 NYCRR 527.15. In New York City the rate is 8.875 percent. On a Zero Down lease that tax is usually rolled into the payment, which raises it by about the same percentage:

  • The $429 Acura Integra becomes about $467 a month.
  • The $449 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 becomes about $489 a month.
  • The $548 Infiniti QX60 Luxe becomes about $597 a month.
  • The $1,795 Cadillac Escalade becomes about $1,954 a month.

Warranty and maintenance on a three-year lease

Every brand on this page has a basic warranty of at least four years or 50,000 miles, so on a 36-month lease the car is covered for the whole lease as long as you stay within the miles.

Some brands also include routine maintenance. BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, and Genesis includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles. A new Lexus comes with its first two scheduled services, at 6 months or 5,000 miles and 12 months or 10,000 miles. When you compare two luxury leases, check what each brand includes, because maintenance you would otherwise pay for is part of the real monthly cost.

Picking a luxury car for the city

All-wheel drive is easy to find at the low end of luxury. In model names, xDrive (BMW), quattro (Audi) and 4MATIC (Mercedes-Benz) mean all-wheel drive. The Audi A3 Premium quattro and Alfa Romeo Giulia AWD are $444/month, and the BMW 228 xDrive Gran Coupe is $468/month.

Compact sedans and SUVs are the easiest to park on the street and fit most garage spaces. Full-size SUVs such as the QX80, GLS and Escalade are the longest vehicles here, so measure your garage space or parking spot before you step up a size.

Two rows or three? The two-row 2027 Infiniti QX65 Luxe AWD is $489/month, and the three-row 2027 QX60 Luxe is $548/month. If you need the third row only a few times a year, price both before you decide.

Where this goes wrong

Comparing payments without the amount due at signing

Luxury lease ads often show a low payment with several thousand dollars due at signing. Add the extra cash up front to the total of payments and divide by the number of months. Our guide to leasing a car online walks through an example.

Reading Zero Down as nothing due at signing

Comparing quotes on different terms

A payment from another company may be on a longer term, a lower mileage allowance or a different trim. Ask every quote for the same term, miles and drivetrain before you compare.
