One thing to know before you shop: the advertised payment is before sales tax. In New York City, a $299 payment becomes about $326 once the tax is added, so the cheapest cars on this list are the only ones that stay under $300 all in.

What “under $300” costs once New York tax is added

New York charges sales tax on a lease at the start, on the total of all the payments, under the state’s lease tax regulation, 20 NYCRR 527.15. In New York City the rate is 8.875 percent. On a zero-down lease that tax is usually rolled into the payment, which raises it by roughly the same percentage.

Here is what that does to the list above:

  • A $255 payment becomes about $278 with tax.
  • A $279 payment becomes about $304.
  • A $299 payment becomes about $326.
