What an AWD lease costs once New York City tax is added

New York charges sales tax on a lease at the start, on the total of all the payments, under the state’s lease tax regulation, 20 NYCRR 527.15. In New York City the rate is 8.875 percent. On a Zero Down lease that tax is usually rolled into the payment, which raises it by about the same percentage:

What all-wheel drive does, and what it does not

It helps you get moving. AWD sends power to all four wheels, so the car pulls away more easily on snow, slush and wet hills, and is less likely to spin a wheel at a slippery light or when you leave a plowed-in spot.

It does not help you stop or turn. Braking and steering grip come from the tires, not the drivetrain. In a New York winter, good all-season or winter tires matter as much as AWD.

Some models only come with AWD. On the 2027 Nissan Murano, the Genesis GV70 and the Telluride X-Line, all-wheel drive is standard, so you do not pay extra for it.

Where this goes wrong

Paying for AWD you will not use

If you drive mostly in the city, park in a garage and rarely leave the five boroughs, a front-wheel-drive car with good tires may be enough. AWD earns its place if you park on the street through the winter, live on a hill or drive upstate in snow.

Comparing payments without the amount due at signing
