The RAM 1500’s current generation made its debut in 2019. Since then, upgraded models from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, and Toyota have been offered in the full-size pickup truck market.
The most comfortable and best-handling pickup in the bunch is the 2023 RAM 1500. Its engine lineup consists of three different powertrain options, each of which uses an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 260-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 diesel, the 305 horsepower 3.6-liter V-6, and the 395 horsepower 5.7-liter V-8.
Most RAM models include a split-folding tailgate and lockable cargo bins in the bed. The Ram 1500 is our favorite full-size truck because it has a high inclination for luxury and a great towing capacity.
Engine and Performance
The RAM 1500 is available with gasoline V-6 and V-8 engines coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission with seamless shifts. A 48-volt hybrid system supports both engines, while the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is also offered without electric assistance. A diesel engine is also offered for 2023, but Ram plans to discontinue making it in January of that year.
The 1500 Tradesman, Big Horn, Lone Star, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited trims previously offered the 260-hp diesel V-6 engine. The tough Rebel model offers beefier appearance and true off-road prowess for those who like to explore.
Every RAM 1500 has an impressive ride thanks to a rear suspension that, in contrast to the conventional leaf-spring configuration found on domestic rivals, uses basic coil springs or optional air springs. Even models with adjustable ride height are available, which improves off-road performance and fuel efficiency.
Fuel Economy
The Ram 1500 lineup offers various fuel economy levels thanks to its hybridized V-6 and V-8 engines as well as a diesel alternative. According to the EPA, the rear-drive diesel RAM, which is the most fuel-efficient model, achieves a combined fuel economy rating of 26 mpg. The combined maximum fuel economy for the gas V-6 and V-8 is 23 and 20, respectively.
On our 75 mph real-world fuel-economy route, which is a part of our rigorous testing, a 1500 Rebel with the gas V-6 we tested returned 24 mpg. This is 6 and 4 mpg more efficient than a V-8 Rebel without electric assistance.
Interior
The RAM 1500’s interior features enormous passenger capacity and cubby storage that is incredibly functional. The Ram seems more like a luxury car than a pickup truck in higher trim levels thanks to the addition of expensive materials and creature comforts.
The most expensive variants have actual wood accents and premium leather surfaces, while the majority of models are available with luxury options like heated and ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof.
The crew cab of the RAM 1500 is incredibly roomy, as it is with most full-size pickup trucks. Also, it boasts an unusual split-folding tailgate and a ton of inside storage.
Although the extended cab body design is compatible with both the five-foot-seven-inch and six-foot-four-inch cargo beds, it only goes with the latter. Although it sells the 1500 Classic, a truck from the previous generation, with a standard cab, RAM does not offer the 1500 with one.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The RAM 1500 is loaded with numerous driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. Important safety features include adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic high beams.
