2022 Acura MDX Vs. 2022 Genesis GV80: Which Is Better?

Luxury SUV shoppers who want something less flashy as the BMWs and Mercedes, yet quite classy and attractive, can always choose to lease between the Acura MDX and the Genesis GV80.  These two stunning three-row luxury SUVs offer sophisticated interiors, a swath of tech features, and exciting bodywork. Pitting the all-new Acura MDX against the relatively new Genesis GV80, which is better for leasing?

From the top,

The MDX is Acura’s flagship SUV, a midsize three-row SUV, redesigned for 2022 to meet up to competitions from the Genesis, Lexus, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes in the luxury three-row crossover SUV segment. The MDX was one of the earliest forms of three-row unibody crossover. This body style later became so famous today. The MDX has always been one of the best-selling offerings from the Japanese brand for decades. It hopes to maintain this feat and, if for anything, achieve more with the recent ground redesign.

The GV80, on the other hand, debuted last year as an all-new nameplate in the Genesis lineup. The GV80, slotting slightly above the GV70, comes as the brand’s flagship SUV that any shopper looking to lease a luxury midsize SUV shouldn’t sleep on. The Genesis GV80 comes with stylish Korean bodywork and lots of high-tech features to top rival brands while still offering competitive pricing.

What’s New?

The all-new 2022 MDX is in its fourth generation and now affords more space, luxurious niceties, sporty tuning, stylish bodywork. After skipping the 2021 model year, Acura has given its flagship SUV a ground-up redesign, just like the RDX and TLX models. The fully redesigned 2022 MDX gets sleeker and attractive exterior styling and a more premium cabin, stacked with myriads of high-end materials, including optional leather upholstery, open-pore wood, and stainless-steel speaker covers.

Inside, the latest Acura MDX has more legroom in all three rows, increased cargo capacity, a 12.3-inch gauge cluster, infotainment displays, and many tech updates. For performance, the latest MDX still retains the familiar robust all-wheel-drive system. However, its drivetrain is enhanced and feels more agile around turns. Also, a higher performance-oriented model, the Type S, is now part of the lineup.

The Genesis GV80 was all-new last year, so few changes are expected in the 2022 model year. It bears the signatory Korean styling on the outside, sporting a prominent shield-shaped grille flanked by a quad headlight design. On the inside, as go hard or go home is the game in the luxury SUV segment, the Genesis GV80 is not looking to go home anytime soon. This luxurious three-row SUV sports a well-built cabin with premium materials and many exciting features, including a 14.5-inch touchscreen along the top of the dash, heated front seats, a power liftgate, and loads of standard driver-assist features. While it seats five people standard, moving to the Advanced+ trim adds the third row, increasing the seating capacity to seven. Under the hood, you may not find the GV80’s standard four-cylinder engine exciting, but the available twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 will definitely thrill you.

Powertrain And Transmission

If you prioritize more power and torque, you should consider the 2022 Genesis GV80 lease deal. While the all-new MDX uses a 10-speed automatic transmission, the 2022 GV80 uses an eight-speed.

Powering the all-new 2022 Acura MDX is the familiar 3.5-liter V6 of the outgoing model. This V6 still makes 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. However, unlike the outgoing model mated to a nine-speed, this V6 now pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission. All MDX models come standard with a front-wheel drive, while Acura’s SH-AWD system remains an option. Like the 2020 MDX, we might see a new Acura hybrid model this year.

The fully redesigned MDX will also come with a new sporty variant, the Type S model, powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 355 horses and an all-wheel-drive system.

Like the last year’s model, the Genesis GV80, now in its second model year, is expected to come with two engine options. The GV80 comes standard with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to churn out 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. If you find this powertrain uninspiring and don’t mind shelling extra bucks, you can go for the optional twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 that coughs out 375 horses and 391 lb-ft of torque—both engines pair to an eight-speed automatic transmission. And while the four-cylinder comes available with either rear- or all-wheel drive, the V6 comes solely with all-wheel drive.

Handling And Performance

You’ll quickly find the all-new MDX powertrain exciting. The transmission is smooth and slick, while the V6 pushes out enough power to keep going, whether for city or highway driving. It may not be the fastest or sportiest luxury midsize SUV out there, but the MDX is agile, with composed handling and firm brakes. The ride quality is not the fanciest, but neither does the Genesis GV80 offer any better ride quality.

Like the Acura MDX, the Genesis GV80, but not offer so much as a slick and paradisiacal ride, but it’s still smooth and comfortable. While none of the powertrains disappoint, the optional V6 is more engaging. It offers quicker acceleration and more ample power for all your driving needs. The automatic transmission is a tad more refined than that of the MDX.

Fuel Economy

The Genesis GV80 may have more power and better handling than the MDX, but that comes at a price. The 2022 Acura MDX lease deal makes for a more fuel-efficient option. It returns 19/26 mpg city/highway for FWD models and 19/25 mpg for AWD model, against the GV80’s 21/25 mpg city/highway for the four-cylinder model and 18/23 mpg for the V-6.

Interior And Comfort

While the Genesis GV80 offers more headroom space for tall passengers in the front seats than the MDX, it comes standard with two rows, seating five. Adding the optional three-row seats increases the seating capacity to seven, unlike the MDX that comes standard with a three-row seating arrangement. This means that the MDX will offer more head and legroom in the third row, quite unlike the GV80.

For interior technology, both the 2022 Genesis GV80 and the 2022 Acura MDX affords premium materials and a vast range of convenience standard and optional features that you can ask for in a luxury SUV of its class.

Cost

The stylish Genesis GV80 might cost slightly more than the MDX, but it is definitely worth it.
