For 2026 the RAM 1500 is offered with the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 again after it was dropped from the line, alongside the Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six, which comes in standard and high-output form. Two very different characters in the same truck.

The HEMI is the traditional answer — the sound and the feel most people mean when they picture a RAM, and for a lot of buyers the reason they waited.

The Hurricane six makes more power in high-output form than the V8 does and is generally the stronger choice on paper for towing, which matters if the truck is pulling a trailer rather than carrying tools.

Where it affects the lease: the two engines have different residual values and different levels of manufacturer support, and those move month to month. Two trucks that look identical on the lot can be forty or fifty dollars a month apart for that reason alone. A Crew Cab short-bed at 232.9 inches leaves you a handful of inches at each end, before you account for anything stored against the back wall. Plenty of Staten Island garages simply will not take one with the door closed.

The driveway is usually the easier answer, and it is the real advantage this borough has over the rest of the city. Which is also why the commercial parking rule that bites hard in Brooklyn and Queens — no commercial vehicle left on a residential street overnight — barely applies here: a private driveway is not a residential street. If the truck sleeps on your own property, that whole problem goes away.

Most trucks on this island earn their keep, and a work truck on a lease has three cost traps that a family SUV does not. All three are cheap to handle at signing and expensive to handle at turn-in.

Register it in the right class from the start. A truck used for business may need commercial registration in New York, and that decision runs through everything downstream — the plates, the insurance policy, and whether your coverage actually responds after an incident on a job. A personal policy on a truck being used commercially is a problem you discover at the worst possible moment. Tell us at the quoting stage if the truck is going to earn, and if it is going on a company rather than on you, ask about corporate and fleet leasing, which is written differently from a personal contract.

Think about the bed before you drill it. Racks, toolboxes, fifth-wheel hardware and liners are normal on a working truck — but a lease is returned against a wear standard, and holes drilled through a bed or a bumper are not wear, they are damage. Bed liners and no-drill mounting are worth the extra at the start. Photograph the bed, the tailgate and the bumper on delivery day so you can prove what was already there.

Set the mileage allowance honestly. Staten Island is the most car-dependent borough in the city, and a truck doing job sites and deliveries is well past the ten thousand miles most advertised payments assume. New York does not tax a lease month by month. Under Tax Law §1111(i), the tax is assessed once, at signing, on the total of every payment across the term. Staten Island sits in Richmond County and registers at the New York City rate of 8.875%, and that rate follows where the truck is registered, not where the dealership sits.

On a $500 monthly payment over thirty-six months, that is $18,000 in payments and roughly $1,598 in sales tax, due at signing. At $650 a month it is about $2,077, and at $850 about $2,716.

It is normally capitalised into the monthly payment, which is why most people never see it as a line of its own. Ask for the figure before you sign. A quote that does not show it is not a complete quote.

A down payment does not make a lease cheaper. It moves money from later to now.

Put $4,500 down on a thirty-six month RAM lease and the payment falls by roughly $125 a month. Across the term you have paid the same, less a small amount of interest on the reduced balance. What you have also done is hand the bank $4,500 that is gone if the truck is written off or stolen in month four, because the insurance settlement is paid to the lienholder rather than to you. GAP covers the shortfall still owed to the finance company. It does not refund your capitalised cost reduction.

On a working truck that argument is stronger again, because the truck is exposed on job sites as well as at home. That is the case for zero down leasing, and it is why we default to it.

What zero down does not remove. The sales tax above is still due at signing, along with the first month’s payment, the bank acquisition fee and New York DMV registration. Those can be rolled in, but they cannot be made to disappear.
