Sell My Car in Staten Island

Sometimes you want the car gone and the money in your account, with no conversation about what you are driving next. That is a different transaction from a trade-in and it is one we do just as happily.

How do I sell my car in Staten Island without going to a dealership?

You send us the details, we make an offer, and if you take it we handle the paperwork and collect the car. There is no lot to drive to, no wait while somebody walks out to look at it, and no second conversation with a manager who comes back with a lower number than the first one.

We are a broker rather than a franchised dealer, which means we are not trying to fill a specific slot on a specific lot. We take cars in volume and move them on, so the offer is based on what your car is worth to the market rather than on whether it suits one showroom this week.

Can I sell a car that still has a loan on it?

Yes. The loan has to be settled before the title can transfer, but that is our job rather than yours.

Get a payoff letter from your lender first — it states exactly what is owed and until when. If the car is worth more than that figure, you are paid the difference. If it is worth less, the shortfall has to be covered before the sale can complete, and we will tell you the number before anything is signed rather than after.

What paperwork do I need to sell a car in New York?

Less than people fear. You sign the transfer of ownership section on the back of the title certificate, and a bill of sale — New York’s is form MV-912.

If the title is held by a lender because there is still finance on the car, it is released once the loan is paid off. If you cannot find your title, a duplicate can be ordered from the DMV, and it is worth starting that before you agree a sale rather than after, because it is the one part of the process that can add weeks.

What happens to my licence plates?

In New York the plates belong to you, not to the car. They do not go with the vehicle when you sell it.

You either transfer them to your next car or surrender them to the DMV. Surrendering matters more than it sounds: if you cancel the insurance while the registration is still active, the DMV can suspend your registration and your licence. Take the plates off before the car leaves, and deal with them in the same week.

How much is my car actually worth right now?

Values move month to month, and they move differently for different cars. A three-year-old crossover with average miles and a clean history is a quick sale. A specialist car, a very high-mileage one, or something with paperwork gaps takes longer and the number reflects that.

What we quote is what we will pay, subject to the car being as described. We do not open with a strong figure and find reasons to reduce it when the car arrives.

Tell us what you have

Year, make, model, mileage, and anything you would want to know if you were buying it. We will come back with a number and what you would clear after any finance is settled.

If you are replacing the car as well as selling it, look at trading it in instead — applied against a lease it can reduce the New York sales tax on the next car, which selling outright does not.
