Zero down Nissan leases on Long Island

A down payment does not make a lease cheaper. It moves money from later to now.

Put $3,000 down on a 36-month lease and the payment drops by roughly $85 to $90. Across the term you have paid the same, minus a little interest on the reduced balance. What you have also done is hand the bank $3,000 that is gone if the car is written off in month four, because the insurance settlement goes to the lienholder and not to you.

That is the case for zero down, and it is why we default to it on Long Island the same way we do in the city.

The part zero down does not remove. New York charges sales tax on the total of all lease payments and collects it at signing rather than monthly. The rate is set by where the vehicle is registered, not where you lease it — so a Nassau or Suffolk address is not the same number as a New York City one, and it is worth asking what applies to your address before you sign rather than being surprised at delivery.

Nassau and Suffolk are not one market

We are asked for Nissan pricing across both counties every week and the conversations are different ones.

Nassau tends toward shorter runs and heavier traffic — Great Neck, Manhasset, Port Washington, Garden City, Hempstead, Mineola, Rockville Centre. Plenty of households here are commuting into Queens or the city, so mileage sits moderate but constant, and the second car does school runs and errands.

Suffolk is longer distances and more of them. Huntington, Smithtown, Babylon, Commack, Islip, Patchogue and everything further east run real mileage, and that changes which allowance makes sense. Fifteen thousand a year is not unusual and the difference between guessing and knowing shows up as an overage bill at turn-in.

Be honest about the number at the start. Nissan charges by the mile at return and it adds up faster than people expect.

The money factor is where credit tier shows up on a lease. Multiply it by 2,400 and you get the approximate interest rate — a .00125 factor is roughly 3%, a .00350 is closer to 8.4%. On a $35,000 Nissan that gap is well over a hundred dollars a month, and it is the number least likely to be quoted to you unprompted. Ask for it directly.

What a broker can do that a single dealership cannot is put the same application in front of more than one lender. Nissan Motor Acceptance is not the only bank writing these, and the tier break points differ between them. If you are close to the edge of a tier, that is worth real money.
