Despite its contemporary V-6 powertrain, the 2023 Nissan Frontier looks and feels older than every other mid-size pickup truck. That’s because it is­–by about 16 years. However, Nissan has already revealed the next generation and debuted its 310-hp 3.8-liter V-6 and seven-speed automatic transmission on the current version. While this engine gives the Frontier best-in-class horsepower, its fuel economy is as unremarkable as its old and plasticky interior, as well as its short list of amenities. The result is a pickup that’s best suited for tradespeople and folks who are fine without desirable features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and most active safety technology. The 2023 Frontier does offer an off-road-oriented Pro-4X model, which costs several thousand dollars less than other similarly equipped rivals, but it’s still saddled with the aforementioned flaws.
