2023 Toyota Sienna Vs. 2023 KIA Carnival

The Minivan segment is not as hot as it used to be about a decade ago, no thanks to three-row SUVs, which are becoming increasingly popular. However, if you still have a soft spot for these handsome and practical family haulers, you’d agree that the Toyota Sienna and KIA Carnival are two desirable choices.

Let’s square up these minivans and see which one is ideal for your family in 2023.

For the 2023 model year, both minivans did not get significant updates asides from the Sienna’s new special edition model and reshuffled trim features.

Engine And Transmission

The latest Sienna features an all-hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors to make a total of 245 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. This setup drives the minivan’s front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission, though shoppers can still opt for all-wheel drive.

Unlike the Sienna, every 2023 KIA Carnival features an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 3.5-liter naturally-aspirated V6 engine that develops 290 horses and 262 lb-ft of torque. The Carnival also offers front-wheel drive as the standard drivetrain, but unfortunately, all-wheel drive is unavailable. The Carnival achieves a zero-to-60 time of 7.0 seconds which is 0.7 seconds faster than the Sienna. Both minivans are rated to tow up to 3500 pounds.

Fuel Economy

Here, the 2023 Toyota Sienna has the advantage given its hybrid powertrain. It gets an EPA-rated 36 mpg city as well as 36 mpg highway. On the other end of the spectrum is the KIA Carnival which is good for 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The choice is easy for shoppers looking to save up on gas money.

Interior

The Sienna has a stylish, practical interior with enough entertainment features to keep the whole family busy during long road trips. A 9.0-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, and a six-speaker setup are all standard, while leather upholstery, rear seat entertainment, and a 12-speaker JBL stereo system are optional. Top trims can also be fitted with an onboard vacuum cleaner.

The Carnival’s interior is similarly spaced but more luxurious than the Sienna’s interior. Premium interior materials were used throughout, and it also boasts generous cubby storage spaces. An 8.0-inch infotainment screen, a six-speaker audio system, and woven cloth seats are standard. If you want to switch things up, we recommend higher trims with the 12-speaker Bose premium audio, 12.3-inch dual panoramic displays with navigation system, rear seat entertainment, genuine leather upholstery, etc.

Safety And Driver Assistance

As expected, both minivans are generously equipped with safety and driver-assistive features to ensure the whole family enjoys a smooth, safe, and stress-free ride. These features include;

  • Forward collision-avoidance assist
  • Blind-spot collision-avoidance assist-parallel exit
  • Blind-spot view monitor
  • Rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Lane following assist, etc.
