The 2023 Kia Soul is an unconventional car because it has hamsters bopping out. Although the Soul has a unique appearance on the road, its boxy body conceals a cabin that is incredibly practical and has plenty of space for both passengers and cargo despite its small size.
With a starting price that is thousands less than competitors like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Jeep Renegade, and Kia Seltos, it is also an excellent value. It’s not the most thrilling vehicle to drive, but it’s adequate.
The Soul only has a front-wheel drive configuration and a 147 horsepower four-cylinder engine, but it offers a comfortable ride and many other qualities that make it a pleasure to own.
Engine and Performance
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower, a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), and front-wheel drive is the only available powertrain. The engine is almost the same across the entire Kia lineup.
When you’re trying to pass someone, the CVT willfully chooses lower gear ratios, and the Soul feels peppy when driving around town. The Soul’s handling isn’t particularly precise, but its goal isn’t to carve corners like a sports car, so that’s understandable.
The Soul is a comfortable vehicle with just enough personality to avoid being boring, according to the majority of buyers.
Fuel Economy
The Soul has an EPA rating that ranges from 28 mpg in the city to 35 mpg on the highway. That’s not bad for a box-on-wheels that appears to lack aerodynamics.
Its main competitors, the Nissan Kicks and the Hyundai Venue, provide comparable highway mileage but outperform the Kia in the city, averaging 31 and 30 mpg, respectively. The Soul achieved 30 mpg in a fuel economy test at 75 mph.
Interior
The Soul’s upright body creates a spacious interior with lots of space for passengers and cargo. The interior of the Kia Soul has been given just the right amount of youthful cheekiness to match its stylish exterior. This includes colorful trim and textured door panel inserts.
Other options include heated seats and a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, a smartphone charging pad, a head-up display, push-button ignition, and keyless entry.
Additionally, Kia offers a wide range of interior color options and two-tone paint options for owners to customize their vehicles. The tall-roofed cargo area has room for seven carry-on suitcases, and with the back seats folded, you can fit up to 20 cases. With its smaller hold and tighter rear seat space, the Venue can only fit 4 suitcases behind the back seat and 17 with the seats down.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
On the base Soul model, Kia offers a few pieces of driver assistance technology as standard, but more are available on the S model and higher.
Additionally, the likes of standard forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic high-beam headlamps are safety features to look for.
