The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 comes with no compromises in terms of sportiness and luxuriousness, making it a complete and very compelling machine. In addition, it makes our 2022 Editors’ Choice list. Similar to the regular Benz-branded E-class, the enhanced-by-AMG E53 comes as a sedan, coupe, or cabriolet and features a beautifully appointed and well-equipped interior. Exclusive to this AMG-tuned trio is a rich-sounding turbocharged straight-six-cylinder engine that features an electric supercharger to produce an uninterrupted 429 horsepower. In addition to a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, it’s remarkably quick and capable in all seasons. With a chassis that’s set up to both excite and soothe the senses, the 2022 E53 does a great job of being everything to almost everyone.
What’s New for 2022?
For twenty twenty-two, the E53 has only a few minor alterations. All models now come with standard automatic high-beam headlights as well as a heated steering wheel. All three body styles can now also have a paint job in Nautical Blue metallic.
All E53 configurations come standard with all-wheel drive, an air suspension that is adjustable, a fully digital instrument panel, and a great infotainment system, however, we recommend the drop-top cabriolet model. We would also select upscale options that come with the head-up display and massaging front seats.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Every E53 is powered by an AMG-tuned turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine that produces 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. It features exclusively a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive. The manual swapping of the gears comes at any time via paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The last E53 coupe we tested sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. The standard air suspension effortlessly makes the switch from twisty-road demon to a comfortable freeway cruiser. Swapping drive modes changes the sedan’s road-damping demeanor but without becoming either pillowy or punishing. The steering—similar to the other dynamics—is crisp, responsive, and well-balanced, blending feedback and precision. The E53 features standard 19-inch wheels or optional 20-inch rollers. But, the larger set is more prone to eliciting harsh impacts.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The E53 deserves top marks for interior build quality as well as the ability to make its users feel as if they have just walked into a fine high-end pastry shop in Paris. The sporty, upscale cabin is complemented by a collection of deluxe standard and optional features. The standard interior is quite fancy, but deep-pocketed buyers can make the experience better with exotic wood trims, a fragrance atomizer, and massaging front seats. Pretty red seatbelts are standard fare but can be replaced with black belts, and that’s for free, which we would choose to do. The only thing that bothered us was the column shifter, which is awkward to use at first, looks out of place in a sports sedan and feels weak. The E53 sedan has the smallest trunk among most rivals, yet you can manage to fit a comparable number of carry-ons in it; with the rear seats in place, you can manage to fit five suitcases inside. Coupe and convertible models are not as practical. Interior storage space is vastly better than the competition, with a great center console and a massive underfloor trunk compartment.
We hope that this article has been useful to you as an introduction to the Mercedes E53. It is a wonderful car and a great choice.
