What a Chevrolet lease actually costs in Westchester
New York charges sales tax on a lease once, at signing, against the total of every payment across the term — Tax Law §1111(i)(A) — rather than a little each month. A thirty-six month Malibu at $430 is $15,480 of payments, and the tax is assessed on all of it the day the contract is signed. It is normally rolled into the monthly, which is why it so rarely comes up.
Westchester is where this differs from the five boroughs. The rate follows the address the car is registered to, and Westchester sets tax at municipal level — Yonkers, New Rochelle, White Plains and Mount Vernon each carry their own, separate from the rest of the county.
